Discover the art and craft of photography in this hands-on, six-week introductory course designed for beginners and enthusiasts alike. Whether you’re using a DSLR, mirrorless camera, or even your smartphone, this class will help you understand how to capture compelling images with confidence.

Each 1½ hour session will combine discussion, demonstration, and personalized feedback to ensure you’re learning at your own pace and getting the most out of the experience. You’ll explore key technical skills like exposure, composition, and lighting, while also developing your creative eye and visual storytelling ability.

By the end of the course, you’ll know how to take control of your camera and create photographs you’re proud to share.

Week 1: Introduction & Foundations of Photography

  • Meet & greet, course overview, and goals

  • How cameras work: aperture, shutter speed, ISO

  • Understanding exposure and how these elements work together

  • Practical exercise: experimenting with manual or semi-manual settings

Week 2: Composition & Framing

  • The rule of thirds and other compositional techniques

  • Using lines, patterns, and perspective to enhance your images

  • How to “see” like a photographer

  • Feedback and discussion on practice shots

Week 3: Light & Color

  • Natural vs. artificial light

  • The importance of direction, intensity, and color of light

  • Introduction to white baluance

  • Outdoor shooting exercise (weather permitting)

Week 4: People & Places

  • Portrait basics: working with subjects and capturing emotion

  • Landscape and street photography tips

  • Ethical and creative considerations in photographing people and public spaces

  • Photo walk and critique

Week 5: Storytelling & Creative Exploration

  • Building a narrative with your images

  • Experimenting with different genres and styles

  • Using light and composition intentionally to convey mood

  • Group discussion and feedback session

Week 6: Editing, Sharing & Final Review

  • Introduction to basic editing tools (Lightroom, Snapseed, etc.)

  • How to select and present your best work

  • Sharing your images online or in print

  • Final showcase and wrap-up discussion
